WICKED MANAGEMENTS AND CALLOUS TRADE UNIONS 3

We left off last week at saying that the "Role of Management/ Trade Union was the maintenance of Peaceful and Harmonious industrial relations environment".

The question in need of an answer today and this week is the HOW?

Management actions in actualizing the peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment include at least the following:-

- Manage the relationship with the Trade Union to avoid any forms of disputes.

- Sincerely get involved in collective bargaining.

- Employ competent co-workers.

- Honour all collective agreements.

- Always ready to meet with the Trade Union thereby maintaining an open-door policy with this all important stakeholder.

- Kill all forms of impunity.

- Give all policies that affect employees a human face.

- Pay a fair day's wage for a fair day's work.

On the other hand, the Trade Union, should carry out the under-listed minimum actions

- Recognize Management's right to manage the organisation.

- Commit to collective bargaining, grievance and disputes procedures.

- Put in a fair day's work for a fair day's wage.

- Stop giving ultimatum to go on strike.

- Participate effectively in all training programs organized by Management.

You would have noticed that what the Trade Union needs to do to maintain a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment are fewer than that of Management. The implications are that Management is usually responsible for disharmony in the industrial relations environment by the display of wickedness which is manifested by impunity.

While you are reading this, two Universities based unions are on an indefinite strike that was avoidable by inviting these Trade Unions to a meeting to look into the points of disagreement. Impunity did not allow the Management to call the Unions to a meeting or declare a trade dispute against the Unions while the ultimatum given subsisted.

We shall continue on this Content next week by sharing with you, our paper entitled "Protecting Workers From Unfair Labour Practices (UPLs) In A Period Of National Economic Challenges".

During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...
