JOB HOPPING:A FUNCTION OF INEFFECTIVE PMS 4

Based on my experience, I have identified three types of organisations based on how they viewed Employees Performance Measurement System.

The three typologies are:-

- Absence of formal employees performance measurement system.

- Simple employees based performance measurement system.

- Ego tripping employee performance measurement system.

My 25 years paid employment time, I spent majorly in manufacturing companies.

TYPOLOGY 1: Here, therewere companies which had no formal employees performance measurement system. One thing that was common with them was the recognition of machine performance without appropriate regard for the operator of the machine. Another common denominator was pervasive Nepotism, so that annual salary increment was based on connection.

In three of the companies in this typology, where I thought, I had the power to introduce employee performance measurement system, when I had finished all the groundwork, to start the actual measurement, the business owners cancelled the HR Function stating that, we were introducing Trade Unionism through the back door. In one particular company, my appointment was terminated and I resigned my appointment with another.

TYPOLOGY 2: There were two companies here that both believed that the company's performance was closely related to the employees performance. What they did usually was that at the beginning of the financial year, individual employees were allowed to set their individual goals in line with both the company's and departmental goals. These agreed individual goals were filed with the HR Department, so that during the period of employees performance measurement, it was only the goals that were agreed at the beginning of the year were measured and served as the basis for reward distribution to employees. Infact, in one of the two, two years consecutive adverse performance, led to separation procedure against such employee.

Next week, let us conclude by sharing on the typology three.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

REACTION 1

As I intimated last week, in the next two or three months, I shall be Reacting to posts by other HR Professionals. Today I wish to react to man's inhumanity to man in the work place. There is this young Nigerian who got an employment letter with great excitement but vanished when he opened the letter and saw the offer. The salary was not only very small, but there were no allowances of any kind. Also there were no medical services, no accident insurance, no pension scheme, no job description, salaries are paid late, no performance management system and no opportunity for upward mobility. The only way to survive was for him to get involved in other two jobs after work. REACTION The above situation only exist in places where the HR Manager is just a figure head meant to message the Ego of the employer. In properly organized companies, there are certain minimum HR Policies and Procedures. Where these HR minimum requirements are not in existence only charlatan HR Managers can be comfo...
