The simple ways out of the unending strikes in the public sector trade unions that have been largely ignored are as follows:
THE UNIONS:
- Stop making bogus demands that make the unions appear not to be serious.
- Unions should stop negotiating with people without the authority to sign binding agreements.
- Unions should follow the disputes settlement procedures set out in the Trades Dispute Act.
- The unions must come to terms with the fact that the law does not recognize ultimatum.
- Unions must understand that Strike is the last resort and that No work No pay is a given, if you do not follow to the end of the dispute settlement procedure.
PUBLIC SECTOR MANAGEMENT:
- Nigeria is a signatory to the ILO Convention on Collective Bargaining, so collective bargaining is not politics without accountability.
- Only normal human beings MUST be appointed as Minister of Labour and Employment.
- That supervising ministry must take charge of their collective bargaining processes.
- Negotiators must be given Mandates to negotiate with the unions and whatever agreements reached must be implemented.
- Finally, pubic sector management must learn and accept the reality of the "sanctity of collective agreement"
