One area HR Managers have not provided enough leadership is Staff Annual Vacation.
Most HR Managers in my clime do not know that accumulating more than two years annual vacation is illegal by our laws.
There are places where staff are not allowed to proceed on annual vacation due to the exigencies of the job.
I worked in a place where the average accumulated annual vacation by a majority of the staff was five years vacation. My reaction was very simple, send any staff who applied for vacation to go for two years annual vacations.
After the first year of my stay in this place, made owing of annual vacation became intolerable. I ensured that annual vacation rosters were prepared and submitted to the HR Department latest the third week of December and was implemented from the HR Department. Equally, it became a company policy that any annual vacation not taken within the year is forfeited.
I can report here that no company I worked owed me any annual vacation because I operated as an expatriate staff when it came to annual vacation.
I had an HR Manager who did not proceed on annual vacation for seven consecutive years.
Please note, if the Chief Executive Officer of the company can proceed on annual vacation, there is no staff that cannot proceed on his/her annual vacation. The reason is simply "Leadership is by example.
