HR & EYE SERVICE 4

Most HR Managers in my clime do not know the difference between Employee Relations and Industrial Relations.

One yardstick for identifying irresponsible managements is their response to Trade Union movement.

Irresponsible managements pay lip service to the dictum that their most important resource is their people but do not wish to see union activities in their organizations.

Out of fear based on lack of understanding, some HR Managers let their let branch union executives get away with blue murder.

Some HR Managers fail to understand that their employees in branch union executives are not the Union.

In one place I worked, some branch union executives put themselves into full time unionism thereby abandoning their duties but at the end of the appraisal exercise asked for salary increment.

In another place, the branch executives asked for promotion for an industrial accident victim who was performing a non-technical job.

Some HR Managers behave as  if there would be no industrial harmony without the branch union executives having a free reign.

Most wicked, callous and irresponsible managements do not know that the union cannot stop her from doing the right things for all stakeholders in the organization.

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.

MICRO HR MANAGEMENT 13

There was this company I worked that the Union forced management to 20% deduction on contributory pension but did not remit these deductions to any Pension Fund Administrator (PFA). When I joined, Management agreed that I sign an undertaking with the external auditors that management will pay quarterly deductions monthly in addition  to the current month deductions. However, when it was time to effect the remittance, the Management back tracked on the undertaking. My insistence in the remittances cost I my job with the company. The good news however, after I left, may be for fear of the trouble I could cause the company, Management started the implementation of the undertaking till date.

HR WITHOUT INITIATIVES 2

Once I changed my job from a factory employing over 2,700  and spending a little over N300,000.00 monthly on medical bills to another factory employing a little over 200 staff but spent monthly over N250,000.00 on medical bills.  For me,  this was a beautiful challenge that needed to be attended to.  The result of preliminary research showed that: - - We had 4 retainer hospitals.  - Our staff fall sick majorly on Fridays and Saturdays evenings and mornings respectively.  - Our staff took soft loans from the retainer hospitals,  which they send to us with interest as medical bills.  What did I do?  - Established an Industrial Clinic with an NYSC Doctor plus a Nurse.  - Reduced retainer hospitals by two.  - Got staff to choose which of the remaining two retainer hospitals to attend.  - Stopped the payment of medical bills without referrals from the Industrial Clinic.  - Sourced drugs from the pharmaceutical Division of the Conglomerate for the Industrial Clinic.  - Gave a month's no
