I used to say that there are two people you need not waste your time to correct and/or advice. They are a maiden who has just tested the fruit in the midst of the garden and a pastor. However, by the far worse is the African Illiterate Rich Man who has acquired pride by his wealth.
I have worked with at least three illiterate rich men. My conclusion is that a professional HR man who could work with them are people who are just in HR and not in HR Practice.
Some of the chacteristics of these men are as follows.
- They have monopoly of wisdom.
- They ask for advice to humour HR professionals.
- Their children are the "Thin Thanks"
-- They do not respect agreements with employees.
- They cannot accommodate codified HR policies and procedures.
- A majority of them detest trade unions.
- No form of general salary increments are allowed.
- Nepotism is the rule.
- Original management meeting holds at home amongst family members.
The only way to survive in these illiterate environments is to forget about your principles.
