HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 5

Companies whose employees steal is caused by these companies by pursuing anti-people policies. Today I share with you my experiences in three companies I worked and be the judge whether employees stealing is companies engineered or not.

Firstly, There was the company I worked where drivers used 90 liters of fuel to cover about 400 kilometers, while your truly covered a distance of 450 kilometers with less than 45 liters with a car of the same engine capacity. When I introduced people centric policies, yours truly position was declared redundant with the claim that those policies were more expensive to the company than the stealing that was taking place.

Secondly, In another company, the management made contributory pension deductions from staff salaries but failed to remit same to any Pension Fund Administrator. A Finance staff stole N27 million from the company which he gave to religious organization and this faith based organization insisted that children of God's gift to God cannot be refunded. When I insisted that the over three years deductions be remitted to a PFA, the employment of your truly was terminated.

Thirdly, In this particular company, yours truly was frustrated from implementing people friendly policies to the extent that I had to resign. Some of these policies were:-

- Introduction of HMO for staff medical services.

- Introduction of contributory pension scheme.

- My stand against the conversion of regular staff to contract.

After I left, within eighteen months the company lost N75 million in one location.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.
