WICKED MANAGEMENTS AND CALLOUS TRADE UNIONS 4

Our parting statement last week was that two non- teaching Unions in the University system were already on an indefinite strike. As you read this, these two Unions have suspended the strike for one month after meeting with some fellows without any authority to take any abiding decisions.

In handling "Protecting Workers From Unfair  Labour Practices (ULPs) IN A Period Of National Economic Challenges",we started by identifying some of the current national economic challenges. They include the following:-

- Short supply of goods and services.

- Prohibitive high cost of energy.

- Free fall of the value of the naira.

- High level of unemployment and unemployables.

- Shortfall of skilled manpower.

- Hipper inflation.

- High debt profile.

- Bartered educational system.

- The callous opulent living of the political Elites.

- Excessive borrowing to fund non-product projects..

- Funding of massive white elephant projects.

- Avoidable high cost of living.

The question is, is unfair labour Practices restricted to only managements? The answer is a capital NO.

Trade Unions' unfair labour Practices may include the following:-

- Not putting a fair day's work for a fair day's pay.

- Work-to-rule.

- Refusing to work overtime.

- Refusing to go through the Grievance/ Disputes procedures.

- Contesting the right of management to manage the organisation.

On the other hand, there are some unfair labour Practices by managements. They include the following:-

- Ineffective and inefficient management of the organisation.

- Delays in the payment of employees salaries and gratuities of exited employees.

- Delayed promotion of employees.

- Nepotism in employment and failing to employ competent co-workers.

- Indiscriminate disciplinary actions.

- Unlawful termination of employment.

- Redundancy without proper information to the Trade Union.

- Paying lip-service to employees training and development.

- No diligent implementation of collective agreements.

- Unnecessary delay in the renegotiation of expired collective agreements.

- Being represented by fellows without authority to negotiate with the Trade Union.

The way out of these unfair labour Practices by both the Managements and the Trade Unions, will firm the conclusion of this Content on Wicked Managements and Callous Trade Unions next week.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.
