Unlike a very large members of the HR Profession in my clime, I came into the profession deliberately when I could not get into the University study an M.Sc. degree in Epidemiology which was my first option. I went for my second option of an M.Sc. degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management which I completed in 1990.
Since coming into the HR Profession, I have suffered a lot of discriminations and maltreatments which are to some extents my fault. These my so called bad attitudes are as follows:-
- My disdain for covenant breakers.
- Standing for the truth always.
- Capacity to speak truth to authority.
- My detest for eye service.
- Excess capacity to speak my mind.
Unfortunately, this profession I belong is usually silent when it mattered most. Between 2004 and 2024, there have been several major situations, the professional body should have spoken out loud, but what did we get, a loud silence.
The Labour Laws of the country are treated as shit by the politicians without even a whipper by my professional body. Some of these major politically motivated desecrations of the laws and practices include the following:-
- Amendment to the Trade Union Act to allow for multiple Labour Centers.
- ASUU strike for almost 9 months.
- Registration of the National Union of Academic Technologists out of ASUU.
- Public Sector disregard for Collective Bargaining and the Sanctity of Collective Agreements.
- Indiscriminate strike ultimatums.
The above situations were not important to my professional body but the New Tax Reform Bill in the National Assembly.
In this 2024 alone, I have shared over 30 Contents in my blog (www.samo.com.ng) on core Human Resources Management and this culture of Silence is so loud and deafening to the extent that I have gotten less than 15 reactions. For me this is a Massive discouragement but the beauty of it is that I have refused to be discouraged.
As I proceed on my year end extend vacation from sharing Core HR Contents, please meditate on this matter till I come back to you as from the first week of February, 2025. I wish you all merry Christmas and a prosperous new year all in advance.
