LOUD SILENCE

Unlike a very large members of the HR Profession in my clime, I came into the profession deliberately when I could not get into the University  study  an M.Sc. degree in Epidemiology which was my first option. I went for my second option of an M.Sc. degree in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management which I completed in 1990. Since coming into the HR Profession, I have suffered a lot of discriminations and maltreatments which are to some extents my fault. These  my so called bad attitudes are as follows:- - My disdain for covenant breakers. - Standing for the truth always. - Capacity to speak truth to authority. - My detest for eye service. - Excess capacity to speak my mind. Unfortunately, this profession I belong is usually silent when it mattered most. Between 2004 and 2024, there have been several major situations, the professional body should have spoken out loud, but what did we get, a loud silence. The Labour Laws of the country are treated as shit by th...

THE NLC STRIKE DIRECTIVE

In concluding the Content on "Wicked Managements And Callous Trade Unions", we said it was an uncalled for attitude by the Trade Union to cut it's nose to spite it's face and went ahead to advise that Trade Unions should stick to the provisions in the Trades Disputes Act, so as to establish beyond all reasonable doubts that the politicians have destroyed all institutions on sight including the last hope of the common man. - The Judiciary. The same last week, as if to confirm beyond all reasonable doubts, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) is a callous Labour Center just the affiliate unions, came up with a directive to it's State Councils whose states have not implemented the new National Minimum Wage Act, to proceed on strike with effect from 1st December, 2024. The above action or directive of NLC is unknown to the Labour Laws of Nigeria and even the ILO Convention on Collective Bargaining. When disputes arise, there are set down procedures for settlement. In N...

WICKED MANAGEMENTS AND CALLOUS TRADE UNIONS 5

As we conclude this Content on Wicked Managements and Callous Trade Unions, we shall share with you what should be done by both Management and Trade Union in protecting workers from unfair labour Practices. Last week, we identified some of the National Economic Challenges and the contributions of both Management and Trade Union to unfair labour Practices. The way out of Unfair Labour Practices falls on both the Management and the Trade Union. They are:- - Management and Trade Union must commit to adhering to the Codified Rules of Engagement. - Management shall not go out of the labour policies and procedures of the organisation. - There shall be no secrets in the management workers affairs. - Salaries, allowances and pensions must be paid as at when due (30 days cycle). - Workers shall be given fair hearing. - The Trade Union must be carried along on all issues of discipline and job loses. From the above, what comes out like we said previously, the Trade Unions unfair labour Pract...

WICKED MANAGEMENTS AND CALLOUS TRADE UNIONS 4

Our parting statement last week was that two non- teaching Unions in the University system were already on an indefinite strike. As you read this, these two Unions have suspended the strike for one month after meeting with some fellows without any authority to take any abiding decisions. In handling "Protecting Workers From Unfair  Labour Practices (ULPs) IN A Period Of National Economic Challenges",we started by identifying some of the current national economic challenges. They include the following:- - Short supply of goods and services. - Prohibitive high cost of energy. - Free fall of the value of the naira. - High level of unemployment and unemployables. - Shortfall of skilled manpower. - Hipper inflation. - High debt profile. - Bartered educational system. - The callous opulent living of the political Elites. - Excessive borrowing to fund non-product projects.. - Funding of massive white elephant projects. - Avoidable high cost of living. The question is, is unfair lab...
