WICKED MANAGEMENTS AND CALLOUS TRADE UNIONS 2

The summary of last week's content is that the callousness of the public sector Trade Unions is directly proportional to the wickedness of public sector Managements. I feel sorry and pity for Public Sector Trade Unions for the refusal of Public Sector Managements for not training the unions on how to negotiate with blind and deaf managements.

Now, on my paper "The Role Of Management/Trade Union In An Industrial Democratic Environment". I started by defining Wisdom as being "the correct application of knowledge".

Next, I identified the Stakeholders of the industry in which the training took place. We went further to identify the two most important stakeholders and their representatives. They are the Owners represented by Management and the Workers represented by the Trade Union.

Before we provided a catchall role of management/ trade Union in an industrial Democratic environment, we identified some of the characteristics of an  industrial Democratic environment.

These characteristics include the following:-

- Codified rules of engagement.

- Free entry and exit.

- Recognition of the right of the management to manage the organisation.

- Recognition and Acceptance of the Trade Union as the representative of the workers.

- Acceptance of collective bargaining as a means of fixing the conditions of service for the workers.

- Open and constant communication from both parties.

- Recognition of the Grievance and Disputes procedures.

- Recognition of the Sanctity of Collective Agreements.

- Recognition of the right to fair hearing for both sides to any case.

- Recognition of query as not being a punishment.

- Agreeing that refusal to respond to a query constitute an offense and shall be treated accordingly.

After the above characteristics, we then addressed the question of the role of Management/Trade Union in an industrial Democratic environment as the maintenance of a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment.

The HOW of this maintenance by both parties, we shall highlight next week and make some comments as regards  how the Public Sector has faired compared to the OPS.

Comments

  1. The truth is, in the public sector, no one cares to maintain anything except their own power structures. Trade unions and managements alike are more interested in protecting their own interests than in fostering any meaningful collaboration. The "peaceful and harmonious" environment you aspire to is nothing more than a façade, a convenient illusion both parties use to keep up appearances while the real issues go unaddressed.

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...
