WICKED MANAGEMENTS AND CALLOUS TRADE UNIONS 1

Last month, I was a Resource Person at Trade Union training program where I spoke on "The Role Of Management/Trade Union In An Industrial Democratic Environment" and "Protecting Workers From Unfair Labour Practices (UPLs) In A Period Of National Economic Challenges"

I wish to share with you my thoughts on the above two subjects in these serries of Wicked Managements And Callous Trade Unions. However, before I go into those details, I wish to make some infallible and pervasive statements which are the summary of my thoughts on Wicked Managements and Callous Trade Unions.

While Wicked Managements manifests wickedness by impunity on the one hand, the Callous Trade Unions manifest callousness by giving ultimatum to go on strike.

The Nigerian state is a signatory to the ILO Convention on Collective Bargaining, but does not get involved in sincere Collective Bargaining and the implications of the Collective Agreements that result thereby.

The refusal of public sector managements to negotiate sincerely and honour collective agreements has led to the absolute frustration of public sector trade unions.

The public sector Managements with a large pool of Industrial Relations Experts, refuse to follow laid down disputes settlement procedures to the extent that those who ought to advise to follow the laid down laws, are the first to approach the courts for injections.

On the other hand, public sector Trade Unions out of frustration from their wicked managements have abandoned negotiations and resorted to gunboat industrial relations by giving ultimatum to go on strike which is unknown to the Trades Dispute settlement Law.

Public Sector Trade Unions resorting to strike as the first course of action is a consequence of Public Sector Managements refusal to sincerely negotiate with Public Sector Trade Unions and go ahead to quote and implement the "no work, no pay" clause in the TD Act.

Why don't we have as many strike ultimatums by the Trade Unions in the OPS as the public sector? The answer is very obvious for all to see. All public sector unions strike ultimatums or actual strikes are the handiwork of the public sector wicked managements.

We shall return to the two papers in the Trade Union training next week.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.
