CSR AND THE ENEMY WITHIN

In the course of my HR Practice, I was involved directly in one successful CSR project which exposed the selfishness of people who should know better.

I worked in this company that was a part of a bigger company. While I was in the company guest house which was a walking distance from the office, on a few occasions, I went to the office at night to see what the gatekeepers were doing and what I saw made yours truly to ask for approval for a CSR Project which was a Group Head Office (GHO) Activity that must be reported to the shareholders of the company.

This company was located in a community with very little fresh water.

The gatekeepers we employed were using the opportunity to extort the habitants of the community to have access to the abundant fresh water in the company at unholy hours.

The company main gate was always opened at a fee for people to come in to fetch water or on the alternative, people came in by canoes at night to equally fetch water.

To stop these illegal access to the company's premises and show empathy to our Host community, I applied and got approval to provide water for the Host community outside the fence of the company.

I got the Personnel/Admin Manager to get a quotation for the project after my approval it was sent to the Profit Center Head (PCH) for endorsement which did not come out in two months until something happened.

I had to take an IOU to execute the project directly and water became available to the community. It was after all these, that I got to know that the deals by the gatekeepers did not only involved the Personnel/Admin Manager but also the PCH.

When the PCH was compulsorily retired with immediate effect on something else and could not clear his desk in four days and I was ordered by GHO to clear the desk that I discovered the quotation I had approved three and half months previously.

What played out was while the company was after the welfare of our Host community, there were people within the company who felt the company was taking away their illegal income and tried very hard to frustrate the good intentions of the company.

Next week, let us discuss HR Management and cultural hindrances.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.
