NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGE NEGOTIATION:A POST-MORTEM

What is no longer news is that we have a new national minimum of N70,000. per month. However, what is lost on the nation is the dollar value of the N70,000.

A little historical look back will not harm any right thinking Nigerian..

2009, the national minimum wage was N18,000, that was equal to $117.

2019, the national minimum wage was N30,000, that was equal to $98. AND

2024, the national minimum wage is N70,000, that is equal to $45.

In comparison, between 2011 and 2024 due to the dollar denomination of our consumption economy, the national minimum wage went down by 260% with other attendant consequences on our living standard.

Two beautiful things came out of the negotiation process. Nigeria being a signatory to the ILO Convention on Collective Bargaining notwithstanding, successive governments in Nigeria have always frustrated public collective bargaining and refused to respect or honoured Collective Agreements.

The gains of the national minimum wage negotiations can be summarized and tagged as Attitudinal Structuring.

Attitudinal Structuring focuses on the quality and types of relationships between the two parties.

While the Management would want the Trade Union to back-up it's demand with facts and figures, the Trade Union on the other hand, would not want to negotiate with Managers who have no powers to make decisions.

In plane terms the NLC and the TUC and the President of Nigeria have established once for all times that with public sector negotiations, there is only one person that should be negotiated with - The President. Any level of government  officials below the President is a mere buying of time by government.

On the other hand, the President has demonstrated in very clear terms that the buck truly ends on his table.

Finally, It is hoped that Trade Unions, Senior Staff Associations, NLC and TUC  will take the maximum advantage of this achievement and maintain it, thereby stop wasting time and resources negotiating with anybody below the President in any public sector collective bargaining.

  1. It is quite sad and worrisome how the Naira has lost value resulting in the 260% decline of the National Minimum Wage against the dollar.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.
