PREPARING FOR A JOB INTERVIEW 1

I like to start with a word of caution, that most of my positions may not be main-stream views because of the centrality of our national Malady - NEPOTISM.

There are two people that must prepare for a job interview, the candidate and the HR Manager.

The failure at either the short- run or the long-run is dependent on who did not prepare for the job interview.

It does not matter the level of preparation by the candidate, where there is no vacancy because the position has been filled through nepotism, the candidate will still fail at the job interview.

Candidates fail at job interview by applying for positions, they have no basic qualification and experience.

Candidates equally fail at job interviews by the preparation of multiple job specific curriculum vitae and submitting same to employers without keeping tracks of same. Some candidates are careless to the extent that at job interviews, what they say will be at variant with the CV the employer is holding.

Again, there are candidates who have forgotten all they learnt at school, so that a question directed at academic knowledge, calls to question their academic qualifications.

Also, there are candidates who claim experiences they never had. Candidates who have been coasting along in all the jobs they have had.

Furthermore, there are candidates who cannot explain the details of their claimed achievements. Candidates who appear for interviews with a pack of lies.

Some candidates do not focus on the job interview, rather their focus is on the "connection" which some people now call "sponsor".

I have come across candidates who come to job interviews confused, acting as if they are doing the interviewer a favour for coming at all.

There are candidates who not wish to work but are forced to attend the job interview by those who are tired of bearing their cost, so they deliberately under-perform at the job interview to ensure that they fail, so as to continue living in their comfort zones.

Most importantly, all the above points affect job interviews where there are vacancies and people will be taken on merit.

Candidates who do not prepare adequately for a job interview fail on the short- run.

Next week, we shall continue by discussing those who fail at a job interview on the long-run.

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 8

I have a first degree in Sociology and Anthropology from the best university then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Benin, Benin City. During my undergraduate days, I decided not to earn naira on graduation, so when my course mates were rushing to major in Organizational Behaviour, I opted for Medical Sociology. I equally decided to go on to obtain a Masters Degree in Epidemiology so as to ensure that I work with either WHO or UNICEF where I would be paid in dollars. However, my university of choice was then being shut every other three months. This was against another decision of yours truly that I shall not spend more than 12 months for the masters program. At this point, I changed my mind to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at the best University then in that discipline in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. This major shift brought yours truly into a profession that it's major tenants contradict my major attitudes to life. Some of ...

HR MISTAKES BY YOURS TRULY 6

My refusal to accept two direct instructions from two gentlemen who were instrumental to my employment in two companies where I enjoyed working, cost yours truly those jobs because I considered those instructions as unreasonable. Firstly, I was asked to provide information that would lead to the termination of the employment of five high performing managers. My response was to send my boss a local ICBM to the effect that "a man who circumcises woman do not talk". If the man talks, he will die of hunger. Secondly, I was asked to tell half truths by my boss, which I considered to be telling lies and I refused. My boss explained further to yours truly, that what he was saying was for yours truly to play politics because politics is about half truths. He stated further that should yours truly continue to insist on the truth only, he would join others in fighting yours truly. My response to him was "you're welcome. Within five weeks of this discussion, your truly was tra...

EMPLOYEE STEALING 7

I worked in this particular company that pays terribly disproportionate Junior staff to Managerial salaries. My monthly salary was almost twice the salary of the five junior staff that worked with me. The above great disparity notwithstanding, one of the Clerk's secondary home was a beer parlour where he spent freely. A second junior staff on supervisory grade change his car twice in three years, while I the manager could not afford a single tyre of a car. These two staff, while one was in charge of purchasing, the second was in charge of processing the sales of scraps in the company.
